How to Pack for Summer Travel (Without Packing Your Entire Closet)
Jul 08, 2025
Let’s be honest, packing for summer trips feels like a mental game of “what if.”
What if there's a fancy dinner? What if I need gym clothes? What if I suddenly become the kind of person who hikes?
And before you know it, you’ve got five pairs of shoes, a hairdryer, and that top you’ve never worn but might want to. Sound familiar?
1. Start With the Reality, Not the Fantasy
Are you really going to wear heels in Santorini? Or a linen blazer in 90% humidity?
One of the biggest overpacking traps is imagining your most idealized travel self. Try starting with your actual plans, not your Pinterest moodboard. Check the weather, list your non-negotiables (like walking shoes or modest outfits), and be honest about what you’ll really wear.
2. Embrace the Capsule Wardrobe (Just for the Trip)
You don’t need 12 tops for a 7-day trip. Try building outfits around 2–3 base colors (neutrals work best), then rotate accessories, layers, and a statement piece or two. Think: one comfy dress, one nice dinner outfit, a pair of versatile bottoms, and enough tops to mix things up.
You’ll be surprised how freeing it feels to not have to choose between five similar outfits every morning.
3. Traveling With Kids? Simplify the Chaos
Packing for little ones? Less is more and smarter. A few practical tips:
- Use packing cubes to organize by day or outfit. It’ll save you from digging through everything mid-meltdown.
- Don’t overpack toys, new environments offer plenty of distraction. One comfort item + a small activity bag is enough.
- Bring meds, snacks, and backups of any absolutely necessary items (like allergy-safe foods or specific toiletries).
4. Travel Lighter, Mentally Too
Sometimes we overpack not just stuff, but stress.
Let this be your permission slip to pack simpler, live slower, and travel like the version of you who isn’t always bracing for “what if.” Leave some space in your luggage and your mind for the unexpected joys.
5. Feeling a little more ready to jet off?
Whether you’re flying home, road-tripping with the kids, or trying a new country for the first time, we hope this helped you prep with a little more ease.
